Every event presents unique challenges. A retail environment like the Aventura Mall Google Store requires serious technical problem-solving. You cannot control the environment the way you can in a photography studio.

Managing Mixed Lighting

Retail stores are notorious for mixed lighting temperatures. The mall corridors spill daylight-balanced light through the massive glass storefronts. Inside, the store features bright, warm display lights to highlight the devices. Add the colorful LED accent lights brought in for the music event, and you have a color-grading nightmare.

I relied on my knowledge of custom white balance to keep the skin tones looking natural. I used subtle off-camera flash to fill in the shadows without overpowering the ambient mood of the DJ setup. The goal is always to make the final image look entirely natural, as if no flash was used at all.

Dealing with Glass and Reflections

The Google store is filled with reflective surfaces. Massive screens, phone displays, glass doors, and polished tables are everywhere.
