Breakers, Palm Beach. "Bride & Groom Having fun with Sunglass"

Fun Bride and Groom Sunglass Photo, taken at the Breakers, Palm Beach Florida

Whenever I’m on the job I’m always looking for something interesting and unique to create. As a creative photographer it’s in my nature to view the world as if I’m looking through a lens. I can’t help it. I go through life looking at how the lighting from the sun reflects off the water, or noticing the backlighting on a landscape scene. I see sidelight and can’t help but think how the side lighting adds texture to what the light is hitting. It’s just how I see things. Can’t help it.

When at a wedding, it’s the same thing. This sunglass shot was taken while I was walking back from shooting portraits at The Breakers in Palm Beach FL. The Breakers has a collection of stores that sell, swimwear, jewelry and of course sunglasses. As we walked by it was the backlit sunglasses that caught my eye. That was when I thought; I have to do something with this. So I brought the bride and groom into the store and we played with photography.

I see wedding photography as an endless series of problem solving. Every time I pick up a camera there is a photographic problem to be solved. Usually the solution is simple, a little extra flash, a smaller F-stop, up the is, after many years of solving photography problems it’s second nature. This problem was more complex, How do I get that really cool backlighting effect and yet still keep the bride and groom looking sharp and clear. The solution was, bounce flash.

In situations like this, I have no idea what I’m going to bounce my flash off of. I just new that was the solution. So let’s see, I had the ceiling, which would have given me harsh shadows under the chin, or the corner of the room. A few test shots later I had my shot. The sunglass overlay was taken separately and stripped in using photoshop. I thing it’s cool and I hope you do also. If you agree, send me a note, I would love to hear from you.

Whenever, I’m shooting a wedding my main goal is to provide beautiful photos that tell the story of the bride and grooms day. This story includes, the bride and groom getting ready and all the activity that takes place in the bridal suite. Of course, you can’t forget the groom so I visit the groom and the guys and shoot them doing whatever they are doing as well. Then it’s usually the first look, where the groom gets to see the bride in her wedding gown for the first time. Getting the look in the grooms face is one of the most important aspects of the first look.

After the bride and groom have spent a few minutes together, I start the photos of the bride and groom together. It’s on the way back from the Breakers front lawn that I saw this spot and ducked inside to make this photo.
