Some photographs are carefully planned. Others can only be captured once in a lifetime.
This award-winning image was captured during an Orthodox Jewish wedding ceremony in Miami and remains one of the photographs I am most proud of in my career. It received recognition from the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) Awards, an honor that celebrates technical excellence and artistic vision in professional photography.
What makes this photograph especially meaningful is that it was created almost entirely by candlelight. Preserving the warmth and atmosphere of the ceremony while still revealing the emotion on everyone's faces required careful exposure, precise timing, and just the slightest touch of bounced flash. My goal was never to overpower the natural light, but to preserve the feeling that everyone in the room experienced.
After photographing hundreds of Jewish weddings throughout South Florida over the past three decades, I continue to be inspired by the beauty, emotion, and timeless traditions that make every Orthodox wedding unique.
Orthodox Jewish weddings are filled with powerful traditions, deep symbolism, and emotional moments that unfold quickly and only once. Unlike a portrait session, there are no second chances. Every expression, every prayer, and every blessing must be anticipated before it happens.
In this image, the rabbi carefully holds the beautifully illuminated ketubah while family members gather around him. The candlelight creates a timeless atmosphere that reflects the reverence of the ceremony, while the composition draws the viewer directly into the moment.
Photographs like this are the result of experience, not luck. After photographing Jewish weddings throughout South Florida for decades, I've learned how to work quietly and respectfully while preserving the authenticity of every tradition.
Many wedding photographers rely heavily on direct flash during ceremonies. While that approach produces bright photographs, it often destroys the warm atmosphere created by candles.
For this image, I intentionally allowed the candlelight to remain the dominant light source. A small amount of bounced flash was carefully blended into the scene to lift facial detail without changing the mood of the ceremony.
The result is a photograph that looks natural rather than artificial, allowing viewers to experience the ceremony exactly as it felt in person.
Orthodox Jewish weddings are among my favorite celebrations to photograph because every tradition tells a story.
Some of the moments I always look forward to include:
Each tradition presents unique photographic opportunities that require experience, anticipation, and respect for the ceremony.
If you're planning an Orthodox Jewish wedding anywhere in South Florida or beyond, I'd be honored to document your celebration. My goal is to create photographs that preserve not only how your wedding looked, but how it felt.
Whether your ceremony takes place in Miami, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, or anywhere else, I would love to tell your story with the same care and attention that earned this photograph international recognition.
As a photographer, the Bedeken is one of the most emotionally charged moments of the day. The groom sees his bride before the ceremony, surrounded by family and friends, and expressions change in an instant. I've learned to position myself quietly so I can capture both the emotion on the bride's face and the reaction of those witnessing this centuries-old tradition.
