I've always loved photographing signs when I travel. Sometimes a sign teaches you something about where you are. Sometimes it tells a story. And occasionally, it just makes me laugh.
I found this volcanic emergency evacuation sign while traveling in Costa Rica, where being surrounded by active volcanic terrain makes a warning like this considerably more relevant than it would be back home in South Florida.
As a photographer, I'm constantly looking for things other people might simply walk past. A photograph doesn't always have to be a spectacular landscape or an incredible sunset. Sometimes the most interesting image is a simple object that says something about the place you're visiting.
And then there's my slightly unusual sense of humor.
I liked this photograph enough to hang a print in my bathroom at home.
Let's just say the words “Evacuation Route in Case of Volcanic Emergency” take on an entirely different meaning in that particular location.

Photography can be beautiful, dramatic and artistic—but there's nothing wrong with having a little fun with it, too.
