While taking the ferry between Seattle and Bainbridge Island, I realized the ride offered a fantastic perspective of the Seattle skyline. With the Space Needle on one side, downtown stretching across the horizon, and sailboats moving through Puget Sound, there were photographs everywhere I looked.
I initially photographed the scene with my Fujifilm X-Pro2, which is a great travel camera. But looking across the water at the skyline, I decided to take things one step further.
I switched to my Fujifilm GFX 50S II medium-format camera paired with an adapted Canon 70–200mm f/2.8 lens. The combination gave me the reach I wanted along with the resolution and detail of the larger GFX sensor.
What I especially like about this frame is the sailboat in the foreground. Instead of simply photographing a distant city skyline, the boat adds another layer to the composition and gives the image a sense of scale and life.
The ferry wasn't just transportation to Bainbridge Island—it became part of the photographic experience.
